London out of sound

London is a city for the senses. But what is London like for those who do not have all of their senses intact?

Daniel is one of these people. He experiences London without sound, something that seems alien to many of us who deal with the noise created in the bustling capital.

From the noise of a club in the fashionable east end to the roar of jet engines at Heathrow, these are sounds that he has never heard.

I meet the optimistic Daniel in the iconic Piccadilly Circus. He focuses on what he does have, rather than what he does not.

When asked if he thinks he sees London in a different way than other people, he pauses for a moment, and then says: “ You’d think so, but really, I think we all have our own way of looking at things, and we have different things that we look for.

Sight of London

“Some people find London terrifying, loud, freaky and overcrowded, but I don’t. So I view London differently, but everyone does,” he adds.

He makes a valid point. I always thought that a place like London would be difficult to integrate in if one’s hearing is impaired.

Daniel, however, takes it all in his stride: “It’s about getting used to things and adapting. When I first moved here the buses were really tricky as there were no indicators to tell me where on my journey I was. So I had to check each stop to make sure I got off at the right point.”

He adds: “Now the marquees installed on the buses and tubes have made life a bit easier. They solve problems which only became problems in retrospect”.

It has often been said that those who have one sense impaired have their other senses heightened. I asked Daniel if this was true in his case: “I would say I am very visually observant and notice things.

“I love watching people. There is always something to see here and people to notice”.
